VAUXHALL AMPERA TAKES TOP PRIZE AT WHAT CAR? GREEN AWARDS
What Car?, the UK’s leading consumer focused motoring magazine, has named the Vauxhall Ampera as its Green Car of the Year 2011. The Ampera was also its top alternative-fuel car.
What Car? editor-in-chief, Chas Hallett said: “The Vauxhall Ampera represents a massive step for alternative-fuel cars. It offers all the benefits of owning an electric vehicle with virtually none of the drawbacks. It gives motorists the ability to dramatically reduce their emissions without changing their lifestyle, which is exactly what green cars need to do.”
This isn’t the first time the Ampera has found favour with What Car?’s judges. In 2009, when Vauxhall first revealed details of the car’s clever Voltec system, the Ampera was given the magazine’s prestigious Green Technology Award.
Demolishing the issue of ‘range anxiety’ altogether, the Ampera’s clever Voltec system helps it achieve an incredible *175mpg and combined emissions of below 40g/km, according to official R(EC) 715/2007 regulations for measuring fuel consumption and C02 emissions.
Drivers can expect between 25-50 miles of zero-tailpipe emissions motoring (often enough for a typical daily commute), yet thanks to the Ampera’s innovative range-extender generator, it can be driven for up to 310 miles without having to re-charge the battery or replenish the fuel tank.
“The Ampera takes Vauxhall into a new era,” said Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s Managing Director. “It can genuinely be considered a car that can perform a full range of family duties, with its four-seats and five-door body. Yet its 100mph performance and brisk acceleration mean that it can hold its own in the cut and thrust of everyday motoring, unlike many EVs currently on sale.”
There’s already massive interest in the Ampera from UK buyers through Vauxhall’s ePioneers scheme. For a modest £150, potential buyers can reserve one of the first build slots for the car and join a rapidly growing, but still exclusive, group of people who are destined to become the very first Ampera drivers in Britain.

A WARRANTY REALLY CAN LAST A LIFETIME!!!
- Vauxhall Lifetime Warranty celebrates its first anniversary
- The only car warranty that can last a lifetime
- National search launched for oldest-surviving Vauxhall under single ownership from new
Luton - Vauxhall’s Lifetime Warranty has just celebrated one year on the market, with more than 207,000 owners benefitting from the groundbreaking offer since it was launched in August 2010.
Lifetime Warranty is unique in the UK and provides first registered keepers of a new Vauxhall with no upper time limit on their warranty, until the car has covered 100,000 miles. No other manufacturer has managed to rival the Vauxhall Lifetime Warranty and offer its potential for complete peace of mind throughout a car’s life.
And we do mean the lifetime of a car. So, to celebrate Lifetime Warranty’s first anniversary, Vauxhall is out to find the oldest car in the UK wearing the Griffin badge that’s still road legal, has covered less than 100,000 miles and has been owned by the same person from the date of first registration.
All Vauxhall’s qualify, and if the Prince Henry (pictured, next to the British-built Astra Sports Tourer) had not out-survived its original owner it would too, having covered little more than 50,000 miles in the last 100 years.
So, if you still own a Victor, Viva, Ventora, or even a Lotus Carlton, and bought it new all those years ago, Vauxhall would like to hear from you.
All you need to do to enter your Vauxhall is go to vauxhalldriverscentre.co.uk/oldestcar and fill in the entry form there - advising what model you own, its current mileage, when you bought it new and from what dealer. Entries must be received by October 16, 2011, and subject to verification, the owner of the winning car will receive a half-day performance driving course in the latest 325 horsepower Insignia VXR at Vauxhall’s proving ground in Bedfordshire.
“There’s huge loyalty among our owners,” said Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s Managing Director. “And for average-mileage customers who plan to keep their new Vauxhalls for the medium to long term, Lifetime Warranty is a valuable and reassuring asset for as long as they own the car. No other manufacturer has been able to offer such complete peace of mind for their customers.”

Rare chance to see the New Vauxhall Ampera
Visitors to EcoVelocity, London’s Low Carbon Motorshow, will be given the rare opportunity to test drive a prototype version of the revolutionary new Vauxhall Ampera at Battersea Power Station between September 8-11.
The all new Eco Motoring Festival is being organised by IMIE in partnership with Metro Newspaper, What Car? Magazine and TfL. As its name suggests, the show will feature the very latest green automotive technology, and visitors will get the chance to drive a variety of low- or zero-emissions vehicles on a specially constructed track in the shadow of the famous power station.
What Car? Magazine will also be showcasing its Green Award-winning cars in daily track parades at the venue. The Green Award is one of the most prestigious in the car industry and the top prize will be presented the evening before the event at Battersea Power Station.
In addition to the Ampera, Vauxhall will also be showing the groundbreaking HydroGen4* concept which is currently taking part in real world testing in Berlin as part of clean energy partnership programme. The concept, which is the fourth generation fuel cell vehicle from GM, replaces combustion with an electro-chemical reaction to power the electric drive resulting in only water vapour being emitted from the tailpipe.
The Ampera, which goes on sale in the UK early in 2012, will be the first electric car in Europe to offer zero emission potential and zero range anxiety. Thanks to its unique Voltec propulsion system, the Ampera allows drivers to travel up to 50 miles on a full charge while emitting zero CO2 tailpipe emissions. For longer journeys of up to 310 miles the system seamlessly engages a range extender to generate electricity to power the electric motor, while simultaneously sustaining minimum charge in the battery pack.
Complementing the Ampera and HydroGen4 will be some of Vauxhall’s latest green cars which use conventional engines. One of these will be the 95g Corsa ecoFLEX, which is the lowest-emission Vauxhall on sale currently, and not only avoids VED charges, but also TfL’s Congestion Charge.

SEAT CELEBRATES OUTRIGHT VICTORY IN CAR DEALER POWER SURVEY
Successful Spanish brand SEAT is today celebrating yet another awards triumph with the news that it has come out top in the exhaustive Car Dealer Power survey.
Scores of SEAT franchises nationwide took part in the influential survey, which gives UK car dealers the opportunity to rate their brand on everything from finance offers and warranty arrangements to marketing, brand awareness, bonus structure and return on investment.
SEAT soared to the top of the Car Dealer poll with a score of 90%, a massive leap of 18 places on its position in last year’s survey. Underlining its exceptional performance, it also claimed the title of most improved maker, too.
With almost 130 sales and service dealers nationwide, SEAT is bucking the prevailing market trend by growing both its market share and its absolute sales. July was SEAT UK’s best-ever market share for a single month with a figure of 2.07%, sales of 21,228 year-to-date were another all-time record in the UK and so far this year SEAT’s sales are up 6.7% in a market down 6.7% as a whole.
No surprise, then, that SEAT dealers are in bullish mood. Commenting on the brand’s exceptional performance in the survey Car Dealer editor James Baggott said: ‘Let’s look at the cold hard facts: not only did SEAT win this year’s Car Dealer Power survey to be awarded the ‘Best manufacturer to represent’ title but it did so in style as the most improved maker, too! That really is something to be proud of.
He added: ‘The Spanish firm has clearly listened to concerns from its dealer network and tackled problem areas. Stock levels, bonuses and return on investment were all cited as problem areas in 2010 – but now all three receive either ‘faultless’ or ‘excellent’ ratings.
‘SEAT’s success in Car Dealer Power really is to be applauded – not just for being top of the pile, but because they listened to dealers’ concerns in 2010 and fixed the problems.’
Overall SEAT scored eight ‘excellent’ ratings where last year no area achieved higher than a ‘good’. Marketing in print and on the radio was cited as impressive, while the extensive Ecomotive range was another factor in the marque’s success, said dealers.
SEAT UK Managing Director, Peter Wyhinny, warmly welcomed the great feedback from dealers. He said: ‘I’m very pleased to see that our network is so happy at the moment.
‘The dedicated SEAT UK Operations team and, indeed, the whole staff at SEAT UK headquarters work tirelessly to support our dealers, improve processes and generate innovative ideas to help them improve their sales and profitability. I’m very happy to see the dealer network recognise the team’s endeavours.
‘Clearly, this exceptional effort is paying dividends and – with a major product offensive just around the corner – I’m sure our dealers can look forward to a very busy and productive future.’

SIXTH CONSECUTIVE ‘BEST ROADSTER’ AWARD FOR MAZDA MX-5
- Mazda MX-5 wins ‘Best Roadster’ crown in 2011 Auto Express New Car Awards
- Sixth consecutive Auto Express award for world’s best-selling two-seater
- New Limited Edition ‘Mazda MX-5 Sport Black’ model on sale now at only £22,995 (OTR)
- Typical 0%, 3.9% and 6.9% APRfinance packages available, plus ‘customer-savings’
Mazda’s ability to defy convention and manufacture uniquely appealing cars was given another glowing endorsement this week by experts at the UK’s best-selling weekly automotive magazine.
Judges for the annual Auto Express New Car Awards selected the iconic Mazda MX-5 as ‘Best Roadster’ – for the sixth consecutive year.
Praising the soft-top Mazda MX-5 models continuous success,Auto Express acting editor, Graham Hope, commented: “A short blast behind the wheel is all you’ll need to understand why the latest MX-5 is such as smash hit. For smiles-per-mile at an affordable price, nothing else comes close. Lively performance and beautifully balanced, confidence-inspiring handling combine with ageless looks and a simple, well built cabin – all the things which buyers demand in a roadster.”
More than two decades after the original first hit the road, the Japanese built Mazda convertible is still delivering wind-in-the-hair thrills to buyers on a modest budget – from just £16,990^(OTR). The world’s best‑selling roadster, the MX-5 beat off seven short-listed rivals to claim its sixth Auto Express New Car Award. The short-list of convertibles included the Audi TT, BMW Z4, Lotus Elise, Mercedes SLK, Nissan 370, Porsche Boxster and Renault Wind.
"Mazda is proud to have Auto Express confirm that our products are among the very best on the market,” comments Peter Allibon, Sales Director, Mazda UK. “With its 2011 MX-5 range, Mazda ensures that the soft-top continues to offer the purest, fun-to-drive thrills, while the MX-5 Roadster Coupe delivers an even more premium experience together with that same driving excitement.
“Today, the Mazda MX-5 remains unrivalled as a rewarding sportscar that can also be used all year round. Together with its low running costs, enviable reliability and our current range of ‘customer savings’ off the list price, the MX-5 remains an extremely competitive proposition, priced from just £16,990^ or £19,135^ for a 2-litre Sport Tech model,” adds Allibon.
This summer, the MX-5 line-up is boosted by the arrival of a very different kind of Limited Edition model – the ‘Mazda MX-5 Sport Black’ inspired by the Japanese brand’s strategy – Defy Convention. This newcomer introduces a darker, edgy element to Mazda’s traditional styling with striking similarities to the Mazda MX-5 GT race car currently competing in the Britcar Dunlop Production GTN Championship. Only 500 examples of the 160ps, 2.0-litre, six-speed manual transmission Sport Black will be produced, each costing £22,995 (OTR).
The new MX-5 Sport Black features an eye-catching Brilliant Black powered retractable hard-top, dark gun metal 17-inch alloy wheels, black door mirror mountings, Brilliant Black style bar trims and a choice of three special exterior colours – Spirited Green, Crystal White and Velocity Red – free of charge.
For a limited period, Mazda’s range of ‘customer-savings’ means that prices for the Mazda MX-5 soft-top range start from £16,990^ (on-the-road) and from £18,990^ for the Roadster Coupe.
Special finance offers until 30 September 2011
Mazda dealers are currently offering MX-5 buyers three finance packages: 1. 0% APR* finance on Mazda Conditional Sale (with 50% minimum deposit) up to 36 months – (excludes Kendo). 2. 3.9% APR** finance on Personal Contract Purchase (no minimum deposit) over 24 months – (excludes Kendo). 3. 6.9% APR** finance on Mazda Conditional Sale and Personal Contract Purchase (no minimum deposit) up to 36 months available on all models.
For MX-5 models purchased on Mazda Personal Contract Purchase, Mazda is offering a ‘deposit contribution’ of £1,250 – (excluding Kendo). Mazda is also offering customer-savings of up to £2,000 off the retail list price, depending on the model (excluding Kendo and Sport Black). All offers are available for retail customers only for cars registered before 30 September 2011.

SEAT ALHAMBRA SCOOPS YET ANOTHER COVETED TITLE
SEAT’s all-conquering new Alhambra MPV is continuing its remarkable run of major award wins with news that it has been named Best MPV by Britain’s biggest-selling weekly motoring magazine – Auto Express.
The Spanish seven-seater already has a host of major titles to its name, but that doesn’t lessen the delight at winning the Auto Express crown.
Speaking at the magazine’s New Car Awards this week, Auto Express Acting Editor, Graham Hope, said of the MPV: ‘These machines are the multi-tools of the automotive world and the SEAT is both incredibly practical and easy to live with.
‘A smart exterior and classy interior help to seal the deal, while attractive prices and low running costs take care of your wallet.’
The flexible full-size seven seater from Iberia took the coveted honour as the judges highlighted its appealing mix of style, quality and affordability.
The largest member of the growing SEAT range went on sale here in November last year and is now proving as popular with savvy MPV buyers as it is with the motoring world’s award judges.
Since its UK launch the Alhambra has been awarded ‘Best MPV’ by UK magazines and websites Diesel Car, Fleet World, Carbuyer.co.uk and What Car?
Internationally, it has been named ‘Best MPV’ by El Economista newspaper in Spain, ‘Best Imported MPV’ by Germany’s Auto Zeitung magazine and ‘2011 Best Imported MPV’ by German motor trade magazine Auto Motor und Sport. The Alhambra has also been named ‘MPV of the Year’ in Portugal by the ‘Car of the Year – Crystal Steering Wheel Trophy’ panel members.
Unsurprisingly, perhaps, considering this lengthy list of major honours sales are significantly ahead of early expectations in the UK, with a massive order bank underlining the new Alhambra’s popularity with everyone from family drivers to specialist business and chauffeur companies, and private hire firms.
Available in S, SE or top spec’ SE Lux trim and priced from just £23,525 RRP, the award-winning Alhambra is offered with a choice of modern turbocharged petrol or diesel powerplants. The majority of engines can be paired with either a crisp six-speed manual or smooth six-speed DSG auto that offers the extra flexibility of sequential manual operation via the standard steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts.
As befits a class leader, all Alhambras boast a high level of standard equipment. Among the highlights available across the range are sliding rear doors (optionally available with electric operation); integrated Bluetooth hands-free phone connection; three-zone climate control and parking sensors.
SEAT UK Head of Marketing, Steve Robertson, said of the Alhambra’s latest honour from the UK motoring press: ‘The good news really does keep on coming for our class-leading MPV.
‘I can’t recall a time when a SEAT model has scooped so many top awards in the space of less than a year, which I hope tells would-be buyers all they need to know about the quality, value and genuine class of our new seven-seat Alhambra.’

The Electrifying New Vauxhall Ampera!
Sculptural artistry and precision – the Vauxhall Ampera’s sleek aerodynamics contribute to emission-free battery powered driving. No sacrifices for driver or passengers: the Ampera offers the space, comfort, and convenience of a modern car with five doors, four seats and a storage capacity of 300 litres.
The art of aerodynamics - sporty aerodynamics help maximise the driving range. The airflow around the fascia and outside mirrors has been optimised; the rear has a specifically designed spoiler and clean separation features.
Lightweight materials are used such as clear polycarbonate covers on the front grille and the disk inserts on the 17-inch, five-spoke sport alloy wheels. These help to reduce aerodynamic drag in critical airflow areas.
Sculptural forms and expressive lines - dramatic, boomerang-like headlights seamlessly integrate with the lower fog lights. The car has a dynamic low stance seen most prominently in the front and tail. The bold new Vauxhall Griffin logo is emblazoned on the front grill and the chrome bar across the back.
Vertical slots in the outboard edges of the rear bumper give the car a low sporty look. Its unique Pearl White Diamond colour with matching rocker panels and rear bumper underline the dynamic appeal of the car.
Uncompromised everyday driving comfort - new high quality and high-tech materials set the tone inside the Vauxhall Ampera. It has good all-around vision, a driver-focused cockpit, ample space, head and legroom for 4-adults and a basic luggage volume of over 300 litres.
The interior décor features a unique jetbblack design combined with Spice Red accents and Dark Argent Metallic paint on the instrument panel’s centre stack.
The doors’ design picks up on the car’s electric nature through the use of iconic themes. With an integrated shifter, two information displays and touch-sensitive infotainment centre, the Ampera delivers an all-electronic user experience.
